It is understood that we use computer for data storage and processing..
where there is matter of data storage we talk about file system which is a mechanism to store and retrieve data from hardware where we have stored the data.
It is the data structures and methods that an operating system uses to keep track of files on a disk or partition; that is, the way the files are organized on the disk.
 Some file systems are "virtual", in that the "files" supplied are computed on request (e.g. procfs) or are merely a mapping into a different file system used as a backing store. The file system manages access to both the content of files and the metadata about those files. where as meta dat is the data which contains the data about the data.
Most commonly known file systems are
FAT32, NTFS, EXT4/5,cdfs,iso9600
Every file system has its won mechanism to store the data over the disk.

some of the major differences between FAT32 and NTFS are given below:

-Fat 32 was designed for the windows 98 ME and NTFS  for windows 2000 and xp Home.
- NTFS has security where FAT32 did not.
- NTFS does not need to be defragmented as often as Fat32 drives do.

File system varies OS to OS. We were talking about the windows file system. But Linux Operating system also has its own file system on its partitions. Linux has Ext3 and Ext4 file system.
